GAIA COLLECTION
RAPHAEL MAZZUCCO
In the wilderness of the forest in Lebanon, Connecticut, world-renowned photographer Raphael Mazzucco became one with nature. Surrounded by the hooting of owls, powerful fox cries and supernatural light illuminating the trees, he conjured the inspiration for his Gaia collection. This, he says, is “Mother Earth getting ready to push back”.
GAIA STEEL COLLECTION
RAPHAEL MAZZUCCO
From the Greek word γαια (gaia). In Greek mythology, Gaia was the Mother Earth goddess.
Sometimes, all we need is for the world to slow
down so that we can see, and appreciate, the beauty
around us. Leaving behind his hectic life as a fashion
photographer in NewYork to plant his family’s roots
in rural Connecticut, USA, Raphael Mazzucco used
the ear th as his canvas and let his fusion of nature,
por traiture and photography grow.
“Living on a small farm with animals and colourful birds
like my peacocks brings a sense of grounding,” says
Raphael. “I feel like I’m living a life from so long ago, so
different from the city life I came from.”
The wilderness surrounding his home and studio is
cer tainly steeped in history: the state was considered
the ‘hear tbeat’ of the American Revolution, and the
Native American tribes who changed the landscape
forever live on through the azure lakes and dense
forests.
This sense of spiritual kinship is weaved into each of
the ar tworks from the Gaia collection. The flowers, tree
bark and feathers that adorn these powerful female
warriors are a snapshot of history, born from the
families who tended to their farms and gave back to
the ear th.
His own travels across the continents – from the
plains of Africa toVietnamese rice paddies – have
yielded a bountiful harvest. The original archival prints
are hand-embellished with natural elements from
around the world, connecting all of Mother Nature’s
magic. Created in Raphael’s outdoor studio, they were
exposed to the weather, developing like a photograph
under the sun’s gaze.
“Anywhere and everywhere can be an inspiration,”
explains Raphael. “Beauty is where you want to find it.
I’m fascinated by how these interactions come together
and spontaneously blossom.”
Rustic textures are juxtaposed by daubs of colourful
paint and geometric forms neatly plotted out in string
like the coordinates of a map.Viewers are invited to
navigate their journey through the layers of classical
imagery, nostalgic photography and occasional,
unexpected, glimpse of modern life.
As the second release from the Gaia series, which was
unveiled at Castle Fine Ar t galleries in 2019 to critical
acclaim, these works are bolder than their predecessors
and are framed for the first time. The collection also
includes two new limited edition prints, both of which
are hand-finished with gold foil and printed on 100%
cotton watercolour paper with a beautiful, unique
texture.
Suspended between past and present, these powerful
creations are a contemplative exploration of the time
missed between the shutter of a camera; they are a
reminder to take a deep breath and just be human.
CULO: THE WORLD IS NO LONGER FLAT
Raphael partnered up with music mogul Jimmy Iovine of Interscope Records to shoot an anthology of celebrity portraiture. A collection of stunning, provocative images that celebrate the irresistable beauty of women blessed with real curves and, in particular, with magnificent "culo" (the Italian and Spanish word for ""derriere".
Culo is an art, fashion, and pop-culture movement that defies all national, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. No matter if you were raised to call it derriere, tush, rear end, or booty, Culo is the new epicenter of female sexuality, desire, and empowerment.

MONTAUK
Raphael Mazzucco's work has been featured in a month-long exhibition in London's esteemed Castle Fine Art, Mayfair. Visual narratives capturing the human form set against a backdrop of startling landscapes spanning the continents, from Icelandic glaciers to African wildlife, the outback of Western Australia to Vietnamese rice paddies. He incorporates these documentary forms into building a layered narrative through paint, collage, and hand lettered texts. The artwork relfects a palimpsest approach of articulation through reinvention. Through these works, we journey alongside Raphael through terrains both geographic and emotional, artistic expressions that evidence his imprimatur on our culture as a whole.
BIOPHILIA BY RAPHAEL MAZZUCCO
Definition: An innate love of life and affinity with the living world.
Raphael Mazzucco is irrefutably a lover of life. His passion
for synchronicity between his subjects and settings,
coupled with an epicurean aesthetic, has resulted in
arguably some of the most relevant photography today,
taking the world of fine art by storm. Mazzucco’s work
heralds a new age of art. Biophilia acknowledges his zeal,
and references his instinctive kinship with all living matter.
From fellow man, to his relationship with habitats and the
natural world, his affinity knows no bounds. Nowhere is
this more clearly demonstrated than Biophilia.
This collection is based upon, relies on and draws from
connections. The connection between life, our lives, and
the life forces around us. The connections made when we
step barefoot on earth, submerge our face in water or rest
the length of our bodies against a towering tree; these
connections transcend taxonomy and unite us through
acknowledging our commonality of energy and vitality.
As the alchemists, sorcerers and astrologers of bygone
years knew, to be truly powerful one had to harness the
power of the natural world; thus Mazzucco has formed
an alliance with nature in this body of work to coax full
elemental beauty through his lens. No detail, no element
or biome is deemed irrelevant or unworthy of notice. Their
very existence dictates that they contribute in some way to
the ecosystems and partnerships celebrated in Biophilia.
Mazzucco’s mastery of staging allows the viewer to live
and breathe the moments captured by his photography.
Hinting at a canopy of trees, laden with air so heavy and
so humid, allows his female subjects to exude not only
their God-given beauty, but a sensual and languorous heat
that, without the climatic context, would feel staged and
inauthentic. As an artist, Mazzucco addresses his audience
and asserts that the gentle flurry of a butterfly’s wings, and
the seductive flutter of a woman’s eyelashes, hold equal
gravitas in his compositions.
To be in the presence of this collection of work is to walk
the equator, taking in every vantage, experiencing every
sensation, greeting every living being and absorbing
every detail. His female subjects are your signposts,
directing you between savannahs, prairies, deltas,
grasslands and rainforests, demanding your attention and
commanding that your focus falls not only on them, but
on the waterfalls, woodlands and water lilies that share
their spotlight. An observer will see Mazzucco working
within the framework of finessed photography, with the
applied expression of painting, to influence the sensation
of movement throughout this collection. One has the
distinct impression that he is leading us to recognise that
the breeze causing his subjects’ hair to billow so pleasingly
in some pieces, also gifts us the endemic ripples in sand
dunes, the gentle swell of waves on shorelines; elements so
unassumingly mesmerising one might overlook them in the
pursuit of “beauty”.
Mazzucco does not ask us to choose between the appeal of
nature versus socially imposed standards of attractiveness,
rather he would like us to recognise that both have a part
to play, and neither reach their true potential without the
other. Drawing on the theory of holism, which presents the
idea that natural systems should be viewed as as a whole
rather than individual elements, this body of work is an
unadulterated celebration of splendour.
